Forests & Mountain Meadows Nature-Based Solutions Summit

From towering redwood and sequoia trees to expansive oak woodlands, California’s forests currently store the largest amount of carbon on California’s lands and serve as the headwaters for a large portion of the state’s water supply. Government policy of fire exclusion beginning in the early 20th century, coupled with historic timber harvesting methods, has left California’s forests vulnerable to drought, disease, insects, and catastrophic wildfire. Reintroducing beneficial fire and other nature-based solutions (NBS) like conservation and restoration are critical to building the health and resilience of this important landscape. Mountain meadows are small, but critical wetland ecosystems scattered throughout the state, most commonly found in the high elevation forested headwaters of the Sierra-Cascades. About two-thirds of California’s mountain meadows have been lost through conversion to other habitat types, and about half of the remaining meadows are degraded. If restored, they can improve water security, have incredible capacity to store carbon, serve as natural fire breaks, and provide critical habitat for a wide range of biodiversity

Join us on September 10 in Tahoe City, California for a Forests and Mountain Meadows Nature-Based Solutions summit. In this summit, we will honor implementation leaders and successes to-date, increase connectivity among partners, and explore key opportunities to scale nature-based solutions in the state’s forests and mountain meadows.
