Pastoralism sustains hundreds of millions of livelihoods and underpins the health of rangelands covering over a third of the Earth's land surface — landscapes where biodiversity and resilience depend on the very mobility and customary management systems pastoralists practice. Yet pastoralist tenure security remains largely invisible in official data worldwide, and therefore in the policies meant to protect both people and the ecosystems they steward.

This workshop introduces practitioners to the global pastoralist land tenure indicators, developed by the International Land Coalition with its pastoralist members together with the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) and SPARC (Supporting Pastoralism and Agriculture in Recurrent and Protracted Crises), the indicators were developed for diverse global contexts. They were recently piloted in Mongolia through a landmark government–civil society collaboration between the General Authority for Land Administration, Geodesy and Cartography (GALAGC), the International Land Coalition (ILC), and the National Land Coalition of Mongolia — including JASIL, NFPUG, NAMAC, MLMA, and CPR. 

Rather than a results presentation, this session is hands-on: participants will work directly with the indicator framework and methodology, gaining practical experience applying it to their own contexts. The workshop is designed for a global audience — government officials, pastoralist organizations, civil society, and UN agencies — interested in adapting this approach to their own countries or institutions. Findings from Mongolia's pilot have already informed government–civil society recommendations, UNCCD engagement, and global tenure and conservation monitoring discussions; this session equips participants to be the next ones to apply this tool.
